Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj – The Miraculous Night Journey of the Prophet ﷺ
Al-Isra’ wal-Mi’raj is one of the most extraordinary miracles granted to the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ after the Qur’an itself. It was during this blessed night that Allah honored His Messenger with the Night Journey from Makkah to Al-Aqsa, and the Ascension beyond the heavens.
Allah ﷻ says:
Exalted is He who took His Servant [i.e., Prophet Muḥammad (ﷺ)] by night from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām to al-Masjid al-Aqṣā, whose surroundings We have blessed, to show him of Our signs. Indeed, He is the Hearing, the Seeing.
H2: What Do “Isra” and “Mi’raj” Mean?
Isra (الإسراء): refers to the Prophet’s night journey from Makkah to Jerusalem (Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa).
Mi’raj (المعراج): means ascension — the Prophet’s elevation from Jerusalem into the heavens, until he reached the Divine Presence.
The Context of the Journey
The Isra’ and Mi’raj occurred during one of the most difficult years in the Prophet’s ﷺ life. He had just lost his beloved wife, Khadijah (RA), and his supportive uncle, Abu Talib. This year is known as ‘Aam al-Huzn (The Year of Grief).
When the people of Ta’if rejected him and treated him harshly, Allah granted the Prophet ﷺ this miraculous journey as a source of comfort, hope, and honor.
Allah ﷻ reminds us:
بِسْمِ ٱللَّهِ ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ ٱلرَّحِيمِ
The Night Journey (Isra)
According to authentic narrations (Bukhari & Muslim), Angel Jibreel (AS) came to the Prophet ﷺ, opened his chest, and washed his heart with Zamzam water to prepare him for the journey.
He was then brought a miraculous mount called Al-Buraq, “larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule, whose stride reached the farthest point seen by its eye.” (Muslim)
The Prophet ﷺ traveled with Jibreel (AS) to Al-Masjid Al-Aqsa, where he led all the Prophets in prayer, signifying his leadership among them.
The Ascension (Mi’raj)
From Al-Aqsa, the Prophet ﷺ ascended through the heavens. At each level, he met previous Prophets: Adam, ‘Isa, Musa, Ibrahim (peace be upon them all).
Finally, he reached Sidrat al-Muntaha — the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary — beyond which no creation can pass. Even Jibreel (AS) stopped there.
The Prophet ﷺ advanced until he was in the Divine Presence. There, Allah obligated fifty daily prayers, which were mercifully reduced to five daily prayers upon the advice of Prophet Musa (AS). These five prayers carry the reward of fifty.
Returning to Makkah
The Prophet ﷺ was then returned to Makkah in the same night. When he told the Quraysh about his miraculous journey, many mocked him. But Abu Bakr (RA) immediately affirmed:
"If he said it, then it is the truth."
From then on, Abu Bakr was honored with the title As-Siddiq (the Truthful).
